Actor Benicio Del Toro and director Steven Soderbergh have brushed off critics of their new movie Guerrilla, insisting the film was meant to “p**s off” audiences.
The forthcoming film, which depicts the rise and fall of Argentine revolutionary Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara, came under fire in May at the Cannes Film Festival for its four-hour run time and controversial storyline.
But Soderbergh has defended the $60 million (GBP32.4million) project after a series of scathing attacks from film critics.
And he insists its budget will be recouped by Spanish-speaking audiences, with the length of the film trimmed for its U.S. debut.
He tells the New York Daily News, “If you make a movie like this and nobody’s p**sed off, you’re not doing your job. Che’s a very polarising figure. Everybody’s got their own idea about him and about what a biographical film ought to be. The more people arguing about it the better.”
Del Toro adds: “As my grandmother used to say, ‘No one is better than what he can do’ – he is who he is.”
