Movie Reviews

Movie Review from EmpireOnline.com

Zac Efron’s quest to prove he’s more than a teen heartthrob will neither be hurt nor particularly helped by this adaptation of Ben Sherwood’s weepy bestseller. While Efron shows flashes of honest-to-god acting as the bereaved young man who throws away his future to atone for a horrendous accident, the way the camera lingers on his oh-so-dreamy features makes those flashes hard to spot. And he’s very much the focus here — although Charlie Tahan’s good as his little brother, and Kim Basinger and Ray Liotta show up in tiny supporting roles.

Movie Review from TotalFilm.com

The Truth About Charlie (Zac Efron) is he can see dead people, the result of a car crash that turned his little brother into a ghost he dutifully spends one hour each day playing catch with in the woods. Such supernatural obligations make it hard for this promising sailor turned graveyard caretaker to move on with his life. Will yachter Tess (Amanda Crew) be the catalyst he needs to let Sam (Charlie Tahan) go to the hereafter? Burr Steers’ fantasy romance engrosses at first and has a charming, controlled turn from Efron.

Movie Review from Hollywood.com

Beneath the glossy sheen of Zac Efron there exists the makings of quite a fine actor, glimpses of which were seen in both the blockbuster comedy 17 Again and the indie drama Me and Orson Welles. His transition out of the Disney-fied teen-dream world and into more adult-oriented projects is a gradual, uneasy one, as is evidenced by his latest film, the metaphysical drama Charlie St. Cloud, which finds him perched squarely in between the two camps. Efron, it appears, is in that awkward stage.

Movie Review from Guardian.co.uk

Like a high-jumper cracking the bar in two with his forehead, former teen star Zac Efron fails to make it into the Mature Performer league in this unendurable romantic drama, filmed in the buttery late-summer glow I associate with movies such as Message in a Bottle and The Notebook. Efron plays Charlie St Cloud, a talented high-school yachtsman with a modest family background – his mom, played by Kim Basinger, is a nurse.

Movie Review from TimeOut.com

Tear-jerkers based on novels are standard fare for rising heartthrobs, so this Ben Sherwood adaptation is a logical move for ‘High School Musical’ alumnus Zac Efron – and a logical marketing decision, considering the millions of young women who follow his every move. But there’s something a little too clean cut about Efron for the role of Charlie St Cloud, an ambitious sailor and scholar who turns into a recluse after the death of his younger brother Sam (Charlie Tahan).

Movie Review from Telegraph.co.uk

Zac Efron sees dead people in The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud, though not in a creepy way. One of them is his younger brother, a pugnacious tyke played by Charlie Tahan, who takes the fatal brunt of a side-on monster truck collision. Zac, in the driver’s seat, is taken to the very precipice of the beyond, only to be rescued by the ministrations of a superstitious paramedic (Ray Liotta), who turns out to be dying of cancer.

Though it was directed by Burr Steers, Charlie St. Cloud feels more like a misguided collaboration among Nicholas Sparks, M. Night Shyamalan, and Billy Graham. And if Zac Efron hadn’t signed on, this sappy spiritual fantasy would certainly have skipped the cineplex altogether — in favor of eternal rotation on cable.
